Both organisations sealed their long-term commitment to deploy modern smart port tools for port operations and digitalisation – including implementing just-in-time (JIT) solutions, machine learning and AI as well as other innovative solutions.

This partnership positions Tanger Med and Wärtsilä as champions of the smart marine ecosystem, whereby data exchange will improve operational efficiency, port safety, and environmental sustainability in shipping, including reducing carbon and greenhouse gas emissions.

The new PMIS aims at addressing the needs of the leading maritime liners and alliances calling at Tanger Med Port Complex, to optimise their vessel calls and to use standardised master and event data.

Tanger Med is strongly committed to the International Taskforce PCO (Port Call Optimisation), which is bringing together several international ports including Port of Rotterdam, Antwerp, Hamburg and Los Angeles to harmonise and optimise procedures for the management of maritime calls.

The joint initiative includes the delivery and installation of a Wärtsilä Navi-Harbour VTS System comprising PortLink Port Management Information System, IALA Advanced Coastal Surveillance Radars, VHF Radio Sub-System, Automatic Identification System, Operator Workstation, Network Systems, Ancillary Equipment and a five-year service and support contract.

Currently, Tanger Med is fully engaged in port digitalisation through different initiatives and projects. It has armed itself with the most advanced technology through developing its own Port Community System, which offers a range of services including port call optimisation, vessel traffic services, slot reservation and call priorities management, pilot dispatch solution and traceability.

This project takes the upgrades a further notch up with not only the new Wärtsilä Navi-Harbour VTS System, but through the installation of Wärtsilä Navi-Port, which enables just-in-time (JIT) arrival. JIT reduces the need for vessels to wait at anchorage, bringing down congestion and the risk of collisions, also lessening GHG and carbon emissions. Plus, the new PMIS digitalises the entire port-call process, reducing chances of human error and increasing efficiencies.

Wärtsilä Voyage will handle all the services linked to the project, including design, delivery, testing, operations and technical training. The installation will be completed within 12 months, after which the organisations will continue to collaborate under MoU to drive further smart port development.

To this end, the current quay wall will be completely demolished and replaced by a new one. In order to limit the operational impact, the works will be carried out in three phases. With this deepening project, Port of Antwerp and PSA Antwerp confirm their ambition to make the best and most sustainable use of the existing space at the port.

The Europa Terminal was put into operation in 1990 as the first tidal container terminal at the port of Antwerp. The current maximum draught for vessels that can moor at the quay wall is 13.5 metres. In order to also accommodate container shipping with larger dimensions, the depth of the terminal will be brought in line with the maximum draught of approximately 16 metres at inlet.

Extensive maritime works will be necessary to achieve this deepening. The current quay wall, with a length of almost 1200 metres, needs to be completely demolished. PSA Antwerp is responsible for the renovation of the layout of the adjacent front quay, including new flooring and the installation of large container cranes. The quay wall will be equipped with all no-regret infrastructure measures to enable implementation of shore power. An underwater dam will protect the nearby Galgenschoor nature reserve.

In order to limit the operational impact, the works will be carried out in three phases.This allows a large part of the terminal to remain in operations at all times, while another part of the capacity is diverted to PSA’s Noordzee Terminal. The works are expected to start at the end of 2021.

As the engine of the Belgian economy, the port of Antwerp is evolving along with social and global developments. To continue playing at the top level of world ports, the port must be able to offer extra container capacity to its customers. To this end, the port is permanently working on both expansion, such as with the ECA project, and the optimisation of the existing capacity. The renovation of Europa Terminal is an important step in the further development of a sustainable port.

Between fiscal year to date, Oct. 1, 2020, through Jan. 31, 2021, PortMiami processed a total of 420,838 TEUs representing the busiest four-month period for cargo activity in its history.

Currently, the port receives vessels of up to 340 m in length, with a capacity for around 9,000 teu, while the new maximum size of vessels arrivals will allow the port to handle 14,000 teu vessels.

Santos Port Authority (SPA) worked with the Pilotage of São Paulo and the University of São Paulo (USP) to study the manoeuvrability, hydrodynamic interaction and mooring plans, proving the viability of traffic of these vessels in the navigation channel.

The researchers used mathematical simulations in which the current scenario of the channel, with a depth of 15 m, and a future scenario, with a depth of 17 m, were feasible for ships of up to 15,000 teu.

Greater container traffic at the Santos port complex is on the horizon with the expected expansions of existing terminals and planning for the destination of two other areas, in Saboó, on the right bank, one for the port terminal and the other for the back port.

The port authority further expects cargo to be concentrated in Santos due to BR do Mar, a project by the Ministry of Infrastructure to encourage cabotage.

Excluding BR do Mar, expected growth is 3.3% annually for containerised cargo, generating an increase from 4.4m teu at present to 7.9m teu in 2040, as projected in the port’s development and zoning plan (PDZ).

In January, the port handled 374,100 teu, representing an 11% rise over the same month last year.

The Port of Santos is the largest in Latin America. Connecting over 600 ports in 125 countries. In 2018, the port was responsible for processing 133 million tons of cargo and 4.1 million TEUs, generating USD 250 million in revenue. Primary hinterland comprises 5 states representing 67% of Brazil’s GDP.

Santos is the most important foreign trade route in Brazil. Almost 27% of the country’s trade balance (USD 112.3 bi) passes through the port. It is also the 39º largest container port on Lloyd’s Top 100 list (the second largest in Latin America, and the only Brazilian port on the list).

Santos Port Authority is the institution responsible for managing the public port, its operations and surveillance. The company is currently undergoing a major turnaround, bringing more efficiency, transparency and competitiveness. The goal is to prepare for privatization, a process that was triggered in August 2019 and should be concluded in the next years.
