KLM Cargo has partnered with its long-time Cargo equipment supplier Trip & Co to design a user-friendly, easy-to-install quality product.

Basing its design on KLM’s considerable Cargo in Cabin experience, Trip & Co has produced the tailor-made Cargo Seat Bag (CSB). The product has been submitted to the Dutch Civil Aviation Authority for approval and authorisation.

The bags not only protect the interior, but also double loading capacity on the seats, reduce physical strain during handling and prevent plastic waste.

KLM received the first set of 172 Cargo Seat Bags (single-seat, double-seat and triple-seat versions) on 8 April and undertook its first operational flight using CSBs on 13 April, carrying about 950 boxes (10 tonnes) of medical relief goods and Covid-19 test kits from Shanghai to Amsterdam.

Ton Veltman, KLM Cargo in cabin project manager, commented: “It remains extremely inspiring for me to be part of the close-knit team working on Cargo in Cabin. We have been active for over a year now, with involvement throughout KLM and including our partner Trip & Co. By doubling CIC capacity on our 777s, we now have capacity similar to what we had on our 747s. I’m proud of the many KLM colleagues who have made this innovation happen and of the smart and exceptional product that we developed and delivered with them and Trip & Co. This is an example of creativity and perseverance that will be key in the years to come.”

After two years of construction work, a new logistics building for the handling of goods was officially opened in the logistics area at Brussels Airport.

This building which provides large refrigerated storage spaces and offers direct airside access, accommodating three first-class logistics companies: Kuehne+Nagel, Worldwide Flight Services and Expeditors.

“Thanks to Brucargo West, we now have additional logistics facilities for the transport in optimal conditions of pharmaceuticals in general and COVID-19 vaccines in particular”, explains Arnaud Feist, CEO of Brussels Airport.

“We are thus expanding our first-line logistics infrastructure and temperature-controlled storage facilities, now having the largest refrigerated storage capacity of any airport in Europe.

“Brussels Airport is a proactive investor who aims to make the logistics chain even more efficient and get it ready to accommodate future growth, making the airport an essential economic hub in Belgium, in terms of employment and added value for our country’s economy.”

The direct access airside, the refrigerated space for storing temperature-sensitive goods, as well as the concern for the environment in every aspect of the construction, with e.g. the solar panels and the LED lighting, are the strengths of this new site at Brussels Airport’, explains Geert Torfs, Director Air Logistics at Kuehne+Nagel BeLux.

“We also take care of the very specific packaging of products that need to be kept at steady temperatures. The area for perishables will comprise 3,000m² of refrigerated space in addition to a freezing area and a FASFC inspection area”.

Oman Air, the national carrier of the Sultanate of Oman, has been certified IATA Center of Excellence for Independent Validators for Pharmaceutical Logistics (CEIV Pharma).

In successfully obtaining the industry-wide standard, Oman Air now aims to grow its participation as an important carrier for the global biopharma industry.

Abdulaziz Al Raisi, CEO of Oman Air, commented: “I am delighted to announce that Oman Air has been certified by IATA for CEIV Pharma. The certification underpins our capabilities as a global cargo carrier for the quality handling of time- and temperature-sensitive healthcare products.

“This is especially significant during the current Covid crisis, a time when the integrity of vital medications, including vaccines, relies entirely on safe and dependable cold chain expertise both in the air and on the ground.”

Earlier this year, Oman Air obtained IATA CEIV Fresh Certification for the handling and transport of perishable products.

“Being certified both CEIV Pharma and CEIV Fresh positions Oman Air as a leading airline for the integrity of cold chain logistics,” explained Oman Air CEO Abdulaziz Al Raisi. “We would like to take this opportunity to extend our sincere appreciation to IATA for supporting and guiding us through this process, and to our customers for their continued commitment and loyalty. Oman Air will always strive to exceed our customers’ expectations, with our goals consistently focused on quality assurance and product innovation.”

The Lufthansa Cargo pharma centres in Munich and Chicago, which opened in summer 2020, were recently CEIV Pharma-certified. This means that, in addition to CEIV Pharma certification as an airline, Lufthansa Cargo offers a pharma network of 32 stations worldwide.

After extensive testing, the CEIV Pharma label of the International Air Transport Association also confirms to Lufthansa Cargo in Munich and Chicago the reliable handling and storage of urgent and temperature-sensitive shipments according to the highest international standard. This is also particularly relevant for the transport of highly sensitive COVID-19 vaccines, as these must be transported worldwide and with the utmost reliability.

“The latest CEIV Pharma certification of our centers in Munich and Chicago confirms our high competence in handling pharmaceutical products. With the construction of the two new state-of-the-art centers, we have been able to significantly expand our excellent pharma network. Particularly in view of the corona pandemic, these are promising investments for the future. We can offer our customers the global transport of sensitive corona vaccines via two additional certified centers. We are pleased about the official confirmation of our offer by the CEIV Pharma label,” explained Thorsten Braun, senior director industry development and product management at Lufthansa Cargo.

The state-of-the-art cold storage facility opened at Munich Airport in August 2020 and is the first cold storage facility there with CEIV Pharma certification.
